In the old days (gnagna) we connected to the internet via a personal computer. You know, the ones with a monitor where you can bake your eggs on. Protecting your kids from certain internet content was a mather of installing Net Nanny on your computer.
With the introduction of new internet enabled devices like the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (yes, I like Apple gear), gaming consoles and media players (or any other WiFi enabled device) installing protection software on these devices is not always possible and could be quit expensive. Built-in protection in your OS or your router is also not the best solutions considering multiple devices with different OS and internet speeds.
I have been searching for a solution to this problem for a long time and I found it! It's powerfull, it's always up-to-date and it's free! It's called Live Parental Controls from NETGEAR. The only thing you need is a router from NETGEAR which supports LPC. I did some speed-tests and could not find it to be slower than any other router with the same parameters.
How it works? It's powered by OpenDNS, so you have to create a free OpenDNS user. You can set the default protection, even set protection per timeframes and configure up to 50 different categories of internet contect. Anyone accessing the internet via your router will be using this default protection. If you do not want different protection for different users you can create a bypass account.
