Since Twitter became so popular lots of other software vendors try to add similar collaboration features to their business apps. An example of such an application is Yammer which is like Twitter; a standalone application running in a private cloud meaning only people within the same company can connect and share information.
It looks like Salesforce.com got inspired by Twitter and Yammer and added similar collaboration features to their application. Salesforce Chatter as it's called will be completely embedded into Salesforce.com. Salesforce Chatter is currently scheduled to become generally available in calendar year 2010.
The difference is that you have all your information in 1 place available. Salesforce information, email and instant messenger, intranet and status updates of other applications. You can even pull in information from Twitter or Facebook about competitors, customers or any relevant information.
Salesforce Chatter is a new way to collaborate, adapted to the fast changing world we live in and making people work together more easy.
Can't wait to test drive this new app. Looks like Salesforce.com did it again!
