Twitter do's and don'ts for 2010

I've been using Twitter for a couple of months now and I like it, I like it a lot. The concept is simple which is also its power. You could easily get addicted to tweeting on twitter.

Since November this year the question on Twitter is changed from "What are you doing?" to "What's happening?", which points to the new strategy of Twitter being a news and information network rather than "just" being a micro-blogging service.

This leads us to my do's and don'ts for Twitter in 2010;

  • Don't be boring; I notice a lot of people tweeting meaningless messages as "good morning" and "I am going to bed now". Please save these messages for your partner but don't tweet this to all your followers, even if you are (or think you are) famous
  • Don't elaborate; Stick to the 140 characters reserved for 1 tweet, don't tell long stories, that's what blogs are for
  • Think before you tweet; Don't push information into the cloud which can be used against you. I noticed someone tweeting the GPS location and a photo of his house and in his next tweet he told us they were going on a 2-week holiday. Maybe he can tell everyone where the keys of his house are located?
  • Don't confuse your followers with your friends; Try to get out once and a while and meet your friends in real life, look them in the eyes, touch them, go bowling together (you can tweet your bowling scores with your iPhone)
  • Be original in your tweets, don't retweet to much, news travels fast in the cloud and get's old within the hour
  • Have a problem with a certain product or service? Try tweeting your question or comments with a # before the name of the company, product or service, stay cool, don't swear. Lots of companies use Twitter to check their quality with customers
  • Complete your profile with an avatar, profile and background of your own. People like to know a little of their followers and followee

Please don't see the items above as rules but more as guidelines. If you have any of yourselves or want to comment on the statements above you can leave a comment below. You can follow me on twitter by clicking here
